How does whitening work?

Our professional whitening gel works from the inside. The active ingredient, a low and safe dose of carbamide or hydrogen peroxide, passes through your enamel and breaks down discoloured molecules deep in the tooth.

Is it safe to whiten my teeth?+

At home or in the chair, what is the difference?+

Does whitening hurt?+
No, the treatment itself does not hurt. Some people experience temporary sensitivity, which usually disappears shortly after the course ends.
How quickly will I see my teeth get lighter?+
Most people notice a difference after a few days. The final result is visible after 1 to 2 weeks. How fast varies per person.
What should I watch out for with food and drink after whitening?+
For the first 24 hours after whitening, avoid strongly coloured or acidic products such as:
• Coffee, tea and red wine
• Tomato sauce, curry and beetroot juice
This prevents new discolouration from settling into your teeth.
How long will the result last?+
With good oral hygiene the result stays visible for 1 to 2 years on average. To enjoy it longer, limit smoking and staining drinks.
Can I top up later?+
Yes. Many people choose a short top-up treatment after 6 to 12 months. You can reuse your existing trays, only new gel is needed.
Can I whiten just one tooth?+
Yes, you do not have to whiten all your teeth. At Zonnelach you can also choose to lighten one specific tooth, for example a discoloured tooth after a root canal or trauma. We discuss what suits your situation.

Is whitening right for you?
Will my crowns, fillings or veneers also become whiter?+
No, only your own teeth change colour. Crowns, fillings and veneers keep their original shade. If they are in your smile line, we discuss beforehand how to achieve the most beautiful end result.
What does a whitening treatment cost?+
A whitening treatment at Zonnelach is € 195. This includes the intake, custom bleaching trays and the professional whitening gel.
Is whitening covered by my insurance?+
Teeth whitening is a cosmetic treatment and is not reimbursed by health insurance.
Does whitening affect the strength of my enamel?+
Under the supervision of a dentist and with the right products, whitening is not harmful for your enamel. We use bleaching gel that contains fluoride and potassium nitrate for extra protection and less sensitivity.
I have tartar, what does that mean for whitening?+
If you have significant tartar, we clean first, because you cannot whiten a tooth under tartar. If it bleeds a little afterwards, you wait briefly in the waiting room. After about twenty minutes we call you back in for the scan. If bleeding continues, we ask you to return shortly, with priority for scheduling.
Is whitening okay when I am pregnant or breastfeeding?+
As a precaution we advise against it. Plan the treatment before pregnancy or after the breastfeeding period.
Is whitening allowed in my situation? A few examples:+
• Wearing braces? No, this is not advised until the braces come off.
• Had braces before? Yes, whitening often gives a beautiful result after braces.
• Have a cavity? We treat the cavity first, then whiten.
• Sensitive teeth? We adjust the strength and give tips to reduce sensitivity.
• Older than 50? Certainly, whitening is perfectly possible at a later age too.
And if a tooth is discoloured from the inside?+
That is possible, in which case we perform an internal whitening treatment. It is specifically for teeth discoloured from the inside after trauma or a root canal.
What helps if my teeth are sensitive afterwards?+
Temporarily use toothpaste for sensitive teeth. You can apply a thin layer to the sensitive spots. If sensitivity persists, please contact us.
How often can I repeat a whitening course?+
As long as your teeth are healthy and you use the right products, you can whiten again. To maintain the result a top-up every six months is usually enough.
